My Studio Face

So I mentioned in my other journal entry how we are discovering our sound. “That’s strange”, you may be thinking. How could we be just now finding our sound? I mean, we had been playing since 2011. Why did it take 3 whole ass years? Well, because we spent all those years developing our live shows, and not our actual sound that defines us. We didn’t work on crafting the sound you’d hear while you were at home doing the barbecue thing. Or when you were bumpin’ in your car. The closest we came before this point was our hit “You Don’t Want Me (Crazy)”. That song definitely led us to turn an earlier corner. After that it wasn’t until earlier this year (June 2020) when we got with our production team at Colemine Records and happened to lay down some fire (to be released in the future). Oh, and we were also recording at Akron’s Electric Company Records, where we coincidentally also recording and discovering the sound.

What is this new sound like? You’re gonna feel a little bit of hip hop origins. Also more crooning. And finally, imagine you programmed yourself to Wu Tang from 1992 through now, and also Barry White, Nat King Cole, and Little Ann was in there too. But it’s Wesley Bright, Press Play.

The decision to step away from live shows

This is me along with Kassian and Loukah. These boys were a big surprise, and number 4&5 for our family.

It was January 2019 when I told the band that I needed to not do live shows anymore because I needed to be home more. Of course they understood. They saw the never ending hustle of a front man who worked a corporate gig while raising a family, and building an actual honey company. They got it. But the Honeytones and I had magic. After all, the show we played just before I broke the news to them was the Kennedy Center. It’s hard to beat that. But I’m glad it went that way. Instead of playing live shows, we channeled our energy towards songwriting and being in the studio. Ironically, about a year later the COVID-19 pandemic happened. By that time, we were very centered on bringing y’all the best soul music we could discover. And that’s what we are doing right now.
